Religious
Signing: Comprehensive Guide for all Faiths

totally new guide contains all the vocabulary and information you need to

Signing
the Scriptures
Interpreting for the deaf is an art as well
as a skill. Signing the scriptures for the liturgy is a particular
challenge, requiring both a sense of the poetic and an understanding of
the meaning of a sacred text to a believing community. 'Signing the
Scriptures: A Starting Point for Interpreting the Sunday Readings for the
Deaf, Year C' offers the interpreter a place to begin to develop his or
her own way of interpreting the readings for the Mass. It contains glosses
for the readings for the Sundays and most major feast days from the 'Roman
Catholic Lectionary for Mass'. Published by Liturgy Training Publications.

Interpreter's
Dictionary of the Bible
"I use it to get interpretations of Bible passages.
The book is divided into four major sections, commentary book by book on the
Hebrew Testament, the Apocrypha, and the Christian Testament, and the fourth
section, General Articles. There are also brief sections including a Chronology,
Maps, and Indexes.
The commentary is interesting, most of the contributors seem to take care in
differentiating between what is known historically and what is a matter of
belief or tradition."

Deaf
Diaspora (2004)
Deaf people have the right to read, study, pray, worship, serve,
discuss, and meditate on God's word. Ayres calls for the rediscovery of
the spiritual legacy of the Deaf-World as he explores the history of
ministry programs and proposes a definitive plan for the future. Deaf
ministry patterns over the past forty years are highlighted and a
description is given of the New Culture of Deafness--brought
about by the radical changes in Deaf-World.
Each chapter concludes with useful discussion guides
for
students or small groups.
Ayres calls for the rediscovery of the spiritual legacy of Deaf-World as
he explores the history of ministry programs and proposes a definite
plan for the future.

Guide
To Deaf Ministry
From back cover:
"What must be seen to be fully appreciated is (sign's) singular
appropriateness for religious worship . . . . It is perhaps in the church
service that the beauty of sign becomes most evident. Some churches have sign
choirs. Watching the robed members sign in unison can be an awe-inspiring
experience." - Jerome D. Schein, Speaking the Language of

It's Not What
You Sign, It's How You Sign It
It’s Not What You Sign, It’s How
You Sign It is framed within
politeness theory, an apt model to determine various interpretations of
what speakers or signers mean in respect to the form of that which they
say or sign.
To clarify these
cross-linguistic differences, this volume explores two primary types of
politeness and the linguistic strategies used by English speakers and
ASL signers to express politeness concerns in face-to-face interaction.

Hymns
For Signing
Note: 480 pages! Hymns are
glossed; this is not a sign dictionary with pictures.
A customer wrote: " ... an excellent
resource for worship ... conceptually accurate, with references to the
"American Sign Language Dictionary" for proper signs ... hymns
contained in this book include standard, traditional titles and several
more contemporary songs, as well as songs from different ethnic
backgrounds. This hymnal need not be used only by United Methodists, as
the hymns it contains are standard throughout denominations. This is a
"must have" resource for interpreters of worship." |

With

Willow
Tree: LOVE
About 5 inches tall.
Willow Tree® represents qualities and
sentiments that help us feel close to others, heal wounds or treasure
relationships. Artist Susan Lordi's sculptures communicate elegance,
simplicity, peace and serenity. Her hand-carved forms reveal their
expression through gestures only¦ a tilt of the head, placement of the
hands, a turn of the body. "Emotions and feelings are left to the
viewer to discern," says Susan, "which makes them very
personal." |
